Week 3

Week 3
This weeks lecture focused mainly on the 'forma urbis' of a city, its structure and layout, and how to identify key aspects within it.
In regards to the assignment, I think the discussion on public spaces withina  city will be the one of the most helpful and important aspects to cover in our report. The role of streets as having both economic and social significance and being the key point of exchange of goods and communication defines what a city grows and develops. The level of this interaction and traffic determines the street activities, and ultimately the type of district the are will be. high volume commercial streets will probably up end being the main shopping districts of the city. Financial and business activities can leads to major banks, post offices etc, while high pedestrian and vehicle traffic streets are probably where the main forms of transportation will be located (railways, shipping routes, highways etc).

Closer view of the immediate blocks surrounding the Howard Smith Wharves. Can see how the larger city blocks are broken up into several buildings with small pathways and alleyways between them.

Urban section of Bridge and Wharves

Section through the site at the Howard Smith Wharves. Such a dramatic change in the topography, with steep cliffs that are approx. 35m high. Also how domineering the bridge is in comparison to the site.

Street Section of Brunswick St.

Urban street section of Fortitude Valleys most popular and busiest public spaces. Brunswick St Mall caters for large amounts of pedestrian traffic, with a wide street lined with clubs, bars and cafes all the way along in.
